Atlas

Heavens-holding condemned giant

The Greek Titan who supported the heavens on his shoulders is the eponym for all other things called atlas, especially a bound volume of maps.

Following the tradition of naming things in the sky after the Greek gods, some heavenly bodies (such as a moon of Saturn) also bear the name Atlas.

The theme of support extends to architecture, where a column sculptured in the figure of a man is called an atlas.
