Moor
North African Muslim
A Moor was a Muslim inhabitant of medieval North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula.
The Moors ruled much of Spain from the 8th to the 15th century, leaving lasting architectural and cultural influence: Moorish arches, the Alhambra was built by the Moors.
The term appears in Shakespeare's Othello, where the protagonist is described as a Moor.
Historically imprecise, the word grouped diverse peoples under one label. (Lowercase moor means to secure a boat, or refers to open heathland.)
