white rhinoceros
Two-horned African giant
The white rhinoceros is a large African mammal and one of two rhinoceros species found on that continent, the other being the black rhinoceros.
Despite its name, the white rhino is not actually white—the name likely derives from a mistranslation of the Dutch word for "wide," describing its broad, square-shaped mouth adapted for grazing.
It is the largest of all rhinoceros species and among the largest land mammals.
White rhinos are critically endangered due to poaching for their horns.
