quagga

Half-striped zebra

A quagga was a subspecies of zebra native to South Africa, distinguished by stripes only on its front half while its hindquarters were plain brown.

The last quagga died in captivity in 1883.

The name comes from the Khoikhoi word for the animal, imitating its call.
