rangers

Forest patrol officers

Rangers are people who patrol and protect wilderness areas, parks, or forests: The ranger warned us about bears in the campground.

The term also applies to soldiers trained for raids and reconnaissance, or members of law enforcement units like the Texas Rangers.

In sports and games, a ranger is often a skilled archer or scout character. (Capitalized Rangers refers to sports teams.)
