veldt

South African plain

Veldt is the open grassland of southern Africa, characterized by scattered trees and shrubs.

The terrain is flat or gently rolling, supporting grazing animals and the predators that hunt them.

The word comes from Afrikaans and Dutch, where it simply means field.

Lions stalked wildebeest across the veldt.
