bushveld

Southern African woodland

Bushveld is a type of subtropical woodland found in southern Africa, particularly in South Africa and neighboring countries.

The terrain features mixed vegetation—scattered trees, thorny shrubs, and tall grasses.

It's prime habitat for wildlife and a major destination for safari tourism: We spent a week in the bushveld watching elephants and lions.

The word comes from Afrikaans, combining "bush" with "veld" (open country).
