thylacine

Extinct striped marsupial

A thylacine was a carnivorous marsupial native to Australia and Tasmania, also called the Tasmanian tiger for the dark stripes across its back.

It resembled a dog but carried young in a pouch.

The last known thylacine died in captivity in 1936, making it a modern symbol of human-caused extinction.
