passenger pigeon
Extinct American dove
The passenger pigeon was a North American bird hunted to extinction by the early twentieth century.
Once numbering in the billions—perhaps the most abundant bird on Earth—flocks darkened skies for hours as they passed.
The last known passenger pigeon died in captivity in 1914.
The species has become emblematic of human-caused extinction.
