vestibules

Small entrance halls

Vestibules are entrance halls or passages between an outer door and the interior of a building—transitional spaces you pass through before reaching the main area.

The term extends to similar enclosed spaces: the vestibule of a train car connects carriages, and in anatomy, vestibules are chamber-like cavities at the entrance to canals or passages, as in the inner ear.

We stamped the snow off our boots in the vestibule.
