villas

Luxurious rural homes

Villas are large, upscale residences, typically detached and set on spacious grounds.

The term originally referred to Roman country estates and retains connotations of luxury and leisure.

In modern usage, villa can describe anything from a Mediterranean-style vacation home to a unit in a resort complex: We rented a villa in Tuscany for the summer.

In British English, villa sometimes refers more modestly to a suburban house, particularly Victorian-era semi-detached homes.
