veneering

Applying thin overlays

Veneering is the process of applying a thin layer of fine wood or other material over a less attractive surface, typically to give furniture or cabinetry an expensive appearance at lower cost.

The technique extends to dentistry, where veneering means bonding thin porcelain or composite shells to teeth.

Figuratively, veneering suggests covering something unpleasant with a superficially attractive exterior: His charm was just veneering over a nasty disposition.
