caul
Newborn's head covering
A caul is a membrane, particularly the inner fetal membrane that occasionally covers a newborn's head at birth.
This occurrence was traditionally considered a sign of good luck or protection against drowning.
Caul also refers to the fatty membrane surrounding the intestines (the omentum), used in cooking to wrap forcemeat or pâtés: The sausages were wrapped in caul fat.
