veneers
Surface layers only
Veneers are thin layers applied over a surface to create a better appearance.
In woodworking, a veneer is a decorative layer of fine wood glued over cheaper material: The table is particle board with a walnut veneer.
Dental veneers are shells bonded to teeth to improve their look.
Figuratively, a veneer is a superficial cover for something less attractive underneath: a veneer of respectability, His charm was just a veneer.
