marquetry
Veneer pattern craft
Marquetry is decorative woodwork made by fitting together small pieces of wood veneer, shell, ivory, or other materials to form patterns or pictures.
The technique produces intricate designs on furniture, floors, and decorative objects: The antique desk featured elaborate marquetry on its lid.
Distinguished from inlay, which sets pieces into a solid surface, marquetry assembles pieces side by side on a backing.
