bothy

Scottish mountain refuge

A bothy is a basic shelter in the Scottish Highlands or other remote areas of Britain, typically a small stone hut offering free accommodation to hikers and mountaineers.

Bothies are usually unmanned and minimally equipped—perhaps a fireplace and wooden sleeping platforms—maintained by volunteers for anyone caught out in rough weather: We spent the night in a bothy on the West Highland Way.
