overleveraged
Dangerously deep in debt
Overleveraged describes having taken on too much debt relative to assets or income.
The term comes from finance, where leverage means using borrowed money to amplify potential returns—but also potential losses.
A company or individual who is overleveraged has borrowed beyond their capacity to repay safely: The firm collapsed because it was overleveraged when the market turned.
The condition leaves little margin for error if circumstances change.
