underwatering

Neglecting plant hydration

Underwatering is giving a plant too little water, leading to wilting, dry soil, and eventual death if uncorrected.

The term appears most often in gardening advice distinguishing between the two ways to kill houseplants: The yellowing leaves suggest underwatering rather than overwatering.

The verb underwater follows the same pattern: I tend to underwater my succulents.
