turboshaft

Rotorcraft engine type

A turboshaft is a gas turbine engine designed to power a rotating shaft rather than produce thrust.

Unlike turbojets, which expel exhaust for propulsion, turboshafts convert most of their energy into shaft power—making them the standard engine for helicopters, where they drive the rotor system: The helicopter's twin turboshafts provide redundancy in case of engine failure.

They also power tanks, hovercraft, and some ships.
