shafting

Getting unfairly treated

Shafting is the act of treating someone unfairly or cheating them—being on the receiving end of a raw deal: The company really gave us a shafting on that contract.

The term derives from shaft as vulgar slang for penetration, so getting shafted carries connotations of violation.

Shafting also refers literally to a system of rotating shafts that transmit mechanical power.
