gyroplane

Free-spinning rotor aircraft

A gyroplane is an aircraft that uses an unpowered rotor for lift and a conventional propeller for thrust.

Unlike a helicopter, whose rotor is engine-driven, a gyroplane's rotor spins freely, turned by air flowing up through it as the craft moves forward.

Also called autogyro or gyrocopter.
