pulsejet

Intermittent combustion thruster

A pulsejet is a simple jet engine that produces thrust through repeated pulses of combustion rather than continuous burning.

Air enters through valves, mixes with fuel, ignites, and the resulting explosion closes the valves while exhaust exits the rear—then the cycle repeats many times per second.

Pulsejets powered the German V-1 flying bombs of World War II and produce a distinctive buzzing sound.

They remain popular with hobbyists for their mechanical simplicity.
