tradewinds

Sailors' reliable currents

Trade winds are the steady winds that blow toward the equator from the northeast in the Northern Hemisphere and from the southeast in the Southern Hemisphere.

They're called trade winds because sailing ships relied on them for commercial voyages.

The term now appears figuratively for any reliable, favorable conditions: The trade winds of economic growth have shifted.
