East India

Spice trade destination

East India refers historically to the lands of South and Southeast Asia, particularly the Indian subcontinent.

The term distinguished this region from the West Indies (Caribbean).

It appears most prominently in the names of colonial trading companies—the British East India Company, Dutch East India Company—that dominated commerce and eventually governance in these regions from the 17th through 19th centuries: East India goods, East India trade.
