gyres
Oceanic whirling patterns
Gyres are circular or spiral motions, or the paths traced by such movement.
Ocean gyres are large systems of rotating currents driven by wind and the Earth's rotation.
The word appears in Yeats's famous line Turning and turning in the widening gyre to evoke expanding spirals of historical chaos.
In scientific contexts, gyres describe the massive circular current patterns that dominate ocean basins.
