backwash

Water pulled backward

Backwash is water pushed backward, especially the wave that retreats after breaking on shore or the turbulent water churned behind a moving boat or propeller.

By extension, backwash describes any aftermath or residual effect: the political backwash of the scandal.

In casual use, backwash is the liquid that flows back into a container after someone drinks from it: I don't want your backwash.
