Armageddon
Ultimate cosmic showdown
Armageddon comes from a biblical place name—the site of a prophesied final battle between good and evil.
The word now refers to any catastrophic, world-ending conflict or disaster: nuclear Armageddon, environmental Armageddon.
It suggests total destruction rather than mere calamity.
Used loosely, it can be hyperbolic: Traffic was absolute Armageddon.
