epicenter

Ground zero, geologically

The epicenter is the point on Earth's surface directly above where an earthquake originates: The epicenter was located twelve miles offshore.

By extension, epicenter means the focal point or center of any activity or phenomenon: Silicon Valley remains the epicenter of tech innovation.

The figurative use sometimes draws criticism when center would suffice, but it emphasizes intensity or impact.
