prothrombin

Blood thickening factor

Prothrombin is a protein in blood plasma that converts to thrombin during clotting.

When tissue is injured, a cascade of chemical reactions transforms prothrombin into its active form, which then helps convert fibrinogen into fibrin—the mesh that forms clots.

Prothrombin time measures how quickly blood clots, used to monitor anticoagulant therapy.
