thrombus

Internal vascular plug

A thrombus is a blood clot that forms inside a blood vessel and remains attached there, potentially blocking blood flow.

Unlike clots that form outside the body to stop bleeding from wounds, a thrombus develops within the circulatory system and can cause serious medical problems including stroke or heart attack.

If a thrombus breaks loose and travels through the bloodstream, it becomes an embolus.

The ultrasound revealed a thrombus in her leg vein.
