thromboembolism

Migrating vascular obstruction

Thromboembolism is the obstruction of a blood vessel by a clot that has broken free from its original site and traveled through the bloodstream.

The clot forms in one location (thrombus), detaches, and lodges elsewhere (embolus).

The most common types are deep vein thrombosis, where clots form in leg veins, and pulmonary embolism, where they block arteries in the lungs.

Long flights increase the risk of thromboembolism.
