teletypes

Obsolete message machines

Teletypes are electromechanical typewriters that send and receive typed messages over telegraph or telephone lines.

Before fax machines and email, teletypes were standard equipment in newsrooms, trading floors, and military communications.

The teletype's distinctive clatter meant breaking news was arriving.

Now largely obsolete, the term survives in computing: TTY devices help deaf users communicate by phone.
