TTY

Deaf communication device

A TTY is a text telephone, a device allowing deaf or hard-of-hearing people to communicate by typing messages over phone lines.

One party types, the text transmits as tones, and the receiving TTY displays it.

Though largely superseded by texting and video relay services, TTY numbers still appear on government and business contacts for accessibility: Call our TTY line for assistance. (Lowercase tty is a computer terminal.)
