morse code

Telegraph signaling system

A system of dots and dashes representing letters and numbers, designed for transmission by telegraph or similar signals.

Each character corresponds to a pattern of short and long signals—dots and dashes—that can be tapped out, flashed, or beeped: The ship's radio operator sent an SOS in morse code.

Though largely obsolete for professional communication, morse code remains used by amateur radio enthusiasts and as an accessibility tool. (Usually capitalized as Morse code, after inventor Samuel Morse.)
