Electric typing machines
Teletypewriters are electromechanical devices that send and receive typed messages over telegraph or telephone lines.
A user types on a keyboard, and the machine transmits electrical signals that activate a printer at the receiving end, producing the same text.
Teletypewriters dominated business communications through most of the twentieth century before fax machines and email displaced them.
The abbreviation TTY survives in telecommunications for the deaf.
