swath

Wide band across

A swath is a strip or belt of something, originally the width of grass or grain cut by a single stroke of a scythe.

The word extends to any broad strip: a swath of destruction, a swath of territory.

To cut a swath through something is to move through it forcefully or make a dramatic impression.

Also spelled swathe.
