swathe
Bind in layers
Swathe has two connected meanings.
As a noun, it's a broad strip or band—originally a strip of mown grain, now any wide path or area: The tornado cut a swathe through the town.
As a verb, to swathe is to wrap or bind with cloth or bandages: The mummy was swathed in linen.
By extension, anything enveloped or surrounded: mountains swathed in mist.
Also spelled swath, especially for the noun.
