Eclipse's darkest zone
Umbra is the darkest part of a shadow, where light is completely blocked.
During an eclipse, observers in the umbra see total darkness, while those in the lighter penumbra see only partial shadow.
The word extends to any deep shadow or shade: The room lay in umbra.
In astronomy, umbra also names the dark central region of a sunspot.
