Seljuk

Pre-Ottoman Turkish dynasty

Seljuk refers to a dynasty of Turkic rulers who dominated much of the Middle East from the 11th to 14th centuries, or to their empire and subjects.

The Seljuks converted to Islam and became powerful patrons of Persian culture.

Their defeat of Byzantine forces at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071 opened Anatolia to Turkish settlement: Seljuk architecture influenced later Ottoman styles.

Also spelled Seljuq.
