democratic republic
Representative people's government
A democratic republic is a state that combines democratic governance with republican structure—citizens vote to elect representatives who exercise power on their behalf, rather than ruling directly or through a monarch.
Most modern democracies are technically democratic republics: The United States is a democratic republic, not a direct democracy.
The term sometimes appears in official country names, though its presence doesn't guarantee democratic practices: the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
