street railway

City track transit

A street railway is an urban rail transit system with tracks laid in public streets, carrying passengers in wheeled cars powered by electricity, horses, or cable.

The term is largely historical, referring to systems that operated from the mid-1800s through the early 1900s: The old street railway connected downtown to the fairgrounds.

Modern equivalents are usually called streetcars or light rail.
