electrification

Wiring up infrastructure

Electrification is the process of bringing electrical power to something that previously lacked it.

A region undergoes electrification when power lines and infrastructure are installed: Rural electrification transformed American farm life in the 1930s.

Electrification also refers to converting systems from other power sources to electricity: the electrification of the rail network, vehicle electrification.

The word increasingly appears in discussions of climate policy, where electrification of transportation and heating is seen as key to reducing fossil fuel dependence.
