railings

Stairway edge guards

Railings are a series of rails forming a barrier or fence, typically along the edge of a balcony, staircase, bridge, or walkway.

They prevent falls and provide something to grip: She held onto the railings as she climbed the steps.

The word is more common in British English; Americans often say railing (singular) even for an extended structure.
