sternposts
Hull's aft timbers
Sternposts are the upright structural timbers at the rear of a ship's hull, to which the rudder is attached.
The sternpost forms the backbone of the stern, providing the mounting point for steering gear and helping define the vessel's shape: The shipwrights replaced the rotting sternposts before launching.
