stepwell

Staired water reservoir

A stepwell is a well with built-in stairs descending to the water level, allowing access as water levels rise and fall seasonally.

Found primarily in India and Pakistan, stepwells often feature elaborate architecture—tiered galleries, carved columns, and shaded pavilions—serving as gathering places and refuges from heat as well as water sources: The ancient stepwell had seven stories of ornate stonework.
