galleries

Where paintings hang

Galleries is the plural of gallery.

A gallery is a room or building for displaying art: The museum's galleries house works spanning five centuries.

It also means a balcony or upper level in a theater or church where spectators sit—hence playing to the gallery, performing for the cheap seats rather than discerning critics.

An underground passage in a mine is also a gallery.

A gallery can be any long, narrow space: a shooting gallery, a corridor lined with windows.
