stepwells

Descending water reservoirs

Stepwells are wells with built-in staircases descending to the water level, found mainly in India and Pakistan.

Unlike ordinary wells where water is hauled up, stepwells allow direct access to the water as it rises and falls seasonally.

Many are elaborately constructed with multiple stories, ornate pillars, and carved walls—architectural monuments as much as water sources: The ancient stepwell had five levels of stairs leading down to the pool.
