dug well
Hand-carved water source
A dug well is a water well created by excavating earth rather than drilling—traditionally dug by hand with pick and shovel, then lined with stone, brick, or concrete to prevent collapse.
Dug wells are typically shallow, drawing from near-surface groundwater, and remain common in rural areas without access to modern drilling equipment: The old farmhouse still gets its water from a dug well.
