spring tides

Moon-aligned ocean swells

Spring tides are the highest and lowest tides of the lunar month, occurring when the sun, moon, and Earth align during new and full moons.

The gravitational forces combine to produce tides with the greatest range between high and low water: We scheduled the beach cleanup during spring tides when more shoreline would be exposed.

The name comes from the tides "springing forth," not from the season.
