sea stacks

Coastal rock towers

Sea stacks are isolated columns of rock standing in the ocean near a coastline, formed when waves erode softer portions of a cliff or headland, leaving behind resistant pillars.

They often appear dramatic and sculptural: The sea stacks along the Oregon coast attract photographers from around the world.

Over time, continued erosion will topple them.
